- From Sep 2019 to Sep 2026, 125 companies joined and 126 left — about 18 a year each way, or roughly one member in twenty-five. Most exits are acquisitions or companies that shrank below the index's size rules; most entrants are companies that grew into them, plus spin-offs of existing members.
- Why are changes dated to a quarter and not a day?
- This page is built from SPY's quarterly holdings reports to the SEC, which list every company the fund held on the filing date. Comparing one filing with the next shows who joined and who left in between, but not on which day — so each change is dated to the pair of filings it happened between. The newest changes appear here once the next filing is published, which lags the index provider's own announcement by up to a few months.
- Does a second share class count as an addition?
- No. Members are counted by company, so Alphabet's two share classes are one member, and a company changing its name or ticker is not a change either. A spin-off is an addition: it is a new company that the index holds from the day it separates.
