Methodology#

The calculator grows the investment at EWJ's split- and dividend-adjusted closes, the fund that tracks the Japanese Stock Market — its record is the index's investable history, which is why it begins March 18, 1996 and runs through October 7, 2026. A “buy” is that day's close, or the next session's when the market was closed. Price-only values use the unadjusted closes; inflation-adjusted values divide total return by CPI. A monthly or yearly plan puts in the same nominal amount on the same day of each month or year; taxes, fund fees and transaction costs are excluded. See the annual Japanese Stock Market returns, or the EWJ fund page. Past performance does not predict future results; not investment advice.

FAQ#

What would $1,000 invested in the Japanese Stock Market be worth today?
$1,000 invested in the Japanese Stock Market on October 7, 2016 would be worth $2,409 on October 7, 2026, with dividends reinvested — 9.2% a year compounded (CAGR).
Does the Japanese Stock Market return calculator include dividends?
Yes. Dividends reinvested is the default total-return basis. You can turn it off to see price appreciation alone. Taxes, fund fees and trading costs are excluded.
Can the calculator adjust Japanese Stock Market returns for inflation?
Yes. The Adjust for inflation option deflates the dividends-reinvested total-return series by CPI, expressing the ending value in the starting investment's purchasing-power dollars.
How far back does the Japanese Stock Market calculator go?
The record begins March 18, 1996, the first session of EWJ — the fund that tracks the Japanese Stock Market — with a close every session to October 7, 2026: 30 years, 7 months.
How does this compare with a compound interest calculator?
A compound interest calculator grows a deposit at one fixed rate. This calculator grows it at what the Japanese Stock Market actually returned, dividends included, and states the flat-rate equivalent beside the result: the same money at 5% a year compounded is shown for the same dates so the two can be read against each other. The Japanese Stock Market's own figure since 1996 is on the result card, and it arrives unevenly — the chart shows the path, not just the endpoint.
