About this data

Figures come from the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, not seasonally adjusted (CPI-U, NSA), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and read via FRED. It is the same series the BLS inflation calculator uses, so results match. Each year's inflation rate is the change in that year's average index level against the previous year's average — the convention BLS publishes as the annual rate — and the Dec–Dec column is the other published convention, December against the previous December. The two differ, sometimes by several points, in any year when prices accelerated or slowed sharply. The monthly grid is each month against the same month a year earlier.

Part years are marked. The series begins in 1913 and 2026 covers only the months published so far; for a part year the annual rate compares the months the two years share, so it is a like-for-like year-to-date figure rather than a partial year measured against a full one. October 2025 is absent from every BLS series, so that month is blank and 2025 averages eleven prints. CPI tracks a national basket, so it will not match your own experience — your rent, your health plan and your groceries all diverge from the average.

FAQ#

What is the US inflation rate by year?
The table above lists every year from 1913 to 2026. Over the full record the Consumer Price Index rose an average of 3.3% a year; the last ten years averaged 3.1%. The highest year was 1917 at 17.8% and the lowest was 1921 at -10.9%.
What year had the highest inflation rate?
1917, at 17.8% — the peak of the 1970s oil-shock era, which ended only when the Federal Reserve pushed interest rates high enough to cause a recession. Prices rose faster than that in the years just after the Second World War, before this series begins.
Has the US ever had deflation?
Yes. 1921 (-10.9%), 1922 (-6.2%), 1927 (-1.9%), 1928 (-1.2%), 1930 (-2.7%), 1931 (-8.9%), 1932 (-10.3%), 1933 (-5.2%), 1938 (-2.0%), 1939 (-1.3%), 1949 (-1.0%), 1955 (-0.3%), 2009 (-0.4%) are the only years in this record where the annual average price level fell. 1921 is the deepest, driven by the collapse in energy prices during the financial crisis.
What was the inflation rate in the 1970s?
Inflation averaged 7.1% a year across the 1970s, more than double the long-run average of 3.3%. It ran in two waves, after the 1973 oil embargo and again after the 1979 Iranian revolution, peaking at 17.8% in 1917.
What is $100 in 1970 worth today?
$854 in 2026 — the "$100 → 2026" column shows the same figure for every year in the table. For any other amount, use the inflation calculator.
Why doesn't this match the inflation rate I saw on the news?
Two different conventions get called "the inflation rate for a year". This table's main column compares one year's AVERAGE price level with the previous year's average, which is what the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes as the annual figure. News coverage on the day of a CPI release usually quotes the latest MONTH against the same month a year earlier — those are in the monthly grid below the table, and the December column is the December-over-December basis shown in its own column.
